A 33- year-old Sri Lankan woman, who had been in the Japanese Immigration detention Centre for seven months, has died, The Daily Mirror reported. Officials of the Sri Lankan embassy in Tokyo visited the center and were assured of an impartial investigation into the case by Japanese authorities.

The woman had arrived in Japan in 2017 and was arrested in August 2020 upon the expiry of her visa. She had been locked up in a center that houses foreigners living without a residential permit in the country.

The report suggested she had repeatedly complained about the food in the facility. Preliminary investigations reveal that the victim was a resident of Gampaha in Sri Lanka.

A spokesperson of the embassy stated that the woman was visited by doctors at least on six occasions, and was also hospitalized twice as the health condition deteriorated.

The Japanese Foreign Ministry has been asked to conduct an impartial inquiry and submit the report soon, the spokesperson said, adding the cause of death is still unknown.
