Easter Attacks: Sri Lankan officials arrest ex-police chief and former defence secretary

Colombo, July 2 (IBNS): In a major development, Sri Lanka's former defence secretary Hemasiri Fernando and suspended police chief Pujith Jayasundera have been arrested over failing to prevent the Easter Sunday bombings this year that left over 250 people killed, media reports said.

IGP Pujith Jayasundara was arrested by the CID at the Police Hospital, Narahenpita a short while ago, Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekera told The Daily Mirror.

IGP Jayasundara who was asked to appear before the CID this morning to give a statement over the Easter Sunday’s attacks, was admitted to the Police Hospital, Narahenpita, reported the news paper.

Fernando was arrested by the CID at the Colombo National Hospital, media reports said.

Fernando was admitted to the ICU of the Cardiology Unit at the National Hospital this morning, The Daily Mirror reported.

The Easter Sunday attacks which hit churches this year left over 250 people killed.

The blasts were condemned by world leaders.
