Pakistan apex court says prosecution failed to prove Omar Sheikh guilty in Daniel Pearl case

Pakistan Supreme Court came hard on the government for failing to provide enough evidence and prove Omar Sheikh guilty of murdering US journalist Daniel Pearl, reported Dawn. The court, in its judgment, said the evidence furnished during the trial was full of factual and legal defects. The judgment also explained the reasons why the Supreme Court had earlier on January 28 acquitted him.

The court in January ordered the release of all accused in the case, which led to a major outcry by Western countries. The court also ordered the government to shift him to a safe government guest house, and allow him to spent time with his families.

Pakistan’s government came under pressure from the US government to get Omar Sheikh convicted in the case.

Earlier in April 2020, the Sindh government has filed an appeal against the overturning his conviction by the Sindh government.

Just weeks back, Sindh Police has shifted Omar Sheikh from Karachi to Lahore on security ground.

Daniel Pearl, 38, a journalist working with the Wall Street Journal, was abducted from Karachi. He was later murdered by alleged Al-Qaeda operatives and a graphic video of his execution was sent to the US embassy in Pakistan.
