Sri Lanka PM Mahinda Rajapaksa to propose constitutional amendment
Colombo/UNI/Xinhua: Sri Lankan Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa is set to propose to the cabinet an amendment to the constitution, the PM's media unit said on Monday.
The media unit said that the prime minister made this move taking into consideration the demand for a government that is accountable to the people.
The proposed constitutional amendment would include changes to the executive, legislature, and the judiciary, the media unit said.
One of the demands of recent anti-government protests has also been the constitutional amendment that reduces the power of the executive.
Seventeen new ministers were sworn into the Sri Lankan cabinet on Monday as the nation faces political instability and a severe economic crisis.
