George E. Gabriel, an educationist of Sri Lankan origin, has been appointed to the United States President’s Commission on White House Fellowships by US President Joe Biden. He studied at Sri Lanka’s University of Kelaniya before immigrating to the United States.

He was among the 22 people appointed on 4 June as members of the commission which is responsible for recommending candidates to President Biden for the prestigious White House Fellowship Program.

A lifelong educator and researcher with over 40 years of demonstrated experience on two continents, he has a strong belief that higher education is the primary tool for socioeconomic mobility with equity at the heart of the mobility agenda, the White House appointment release described him.

“These leaders represent the best of America – our collective character, creativity, and diversity. I am grateful these dedicated and accomplished Americans will help select and mentor the next class of White House Fellows who demonstrate exceptional leadership, unwavering passion, and a strong commitment to public service,” Biden was quoted as saying by Colombopage.

The appointed members reflect the diversity and strength of America while also representing a broad range of backgrounds, experiences, and professions.
