US government expresses concern over JUD chief Hafiz Saeed 'running for office' during next election in Pakistan
Washington, Dec 20 (IBNS): The US government has expressed concern over Jamaatud Dawa (JuD) chief Hafiz Mohammad Saeed's decision of running for office during the upcoming general election in Pakistan.
During a press briefing, US State Department Spokesperson Heather Nauert, said: "We have many conversations with the Government of Pakistan. One of the things that happened recently is that this guy was held on house arrest. Pakistan released him from house arrest, and now there is word that he may be running for some sort of office."
"I want to remind folks we have a $10 million Reward for Justice program that would reward for information that would bring him to justice. So I want to make that clear so that everybody knows, $10 million out for this guy, and we would certainly have concerns about him running for office. So I’m glad you highlighted that," he said.
Hafiz was recently released from 300-day house arrest in Pakistan.
Saeed had been put under house arrest since Jan 31.
He was initially put under house arrest for 90 days but the period was later extended more than one time.
Saeed is suspected of masterminding the attack Mumbai in 2008 that killed 166 people.
