Bengal Polls 2021: Second phase of polling in 30 seats including Nandigram underway

Voting in 30 seats including the high-voltage Nandigram is underway in the second phase of West Bengal assembly election 2021. The prestigious fight between West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and her former lieutenant Suvendu Adhikari is taking place in the seat. Mamata, who heads the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), is contesting as her party candidate in Nandigram, taking on the challenge of defeating turncoat Suvendu, who is now a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate.

Mamata alleged, "We were receiving complains that some people were denied to vote. The BJP candidate has been doing goondaism since last night. People were threatened including our leader Abu Taher. We have filed 63 complaints."

Addressing the media in Nandigram, Mamata said, "I am not worried about Nandigram but democracy. They have done cheating. 

"I won't blame CRPF and police. All people and goons are from outside. This is the unfortunate part. I feel sorry for the EC for their silence. They have one-sidedly supported the BJP candidate."

Mamata Banerjee taken out after 2 hours from polling booth

Mamata Banerjee was taken out from the polling booth of Boyal in Nandigram. The Chief Minister was taken out by police personnel, central paramilitary forces after tension erupted in the area. 

The TMC and BJP workers were protesting outside the polling booth.

"We had lodged 63 complaints but the Election Commission didn't take any action. The Election Commission is working as per the instructions of Home Minister (Amit Shah). All outsider people from UP, Bihar are present in the polling booth," said Mamata at a polling booth in Nandigram's Boyal.

BJP candidate in Keshpur attacked allegedly by TMC workers, ECI seeks report

BJP candidate Pritish Ranjan Kuar was attacked and his vehicle was ransacked allegedly by Trinamool Congress (TMC) workers in Keshpur in West Medinipur district of West Bengal on Thursday afternoon, reports said.

According to reports, when Keshpur's BJP candidate Pritish Ranjan Kuar was going to visit a polling station, a large mob attacked his convoy with bricks, sticks, rods and stones at Gunhara village.

Besides Kuar's SUV, several media vehicles were also vandalized, and few media personnel were also injured in the attack.

Later a heavy police force along with Central paramilitary forces rushed to the scene and at least 17 villagers, including four men and 13 women, have been arrested so far in connection with the case.

Pritish Ranjan Kuar, who managed to escape the scene during the violence, was rescued later and he has been taken to Keshpur Police Station.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has sought a report from the local administration and directed them to take strict action into the matter immediately.

A policeman on election duty was found hanging inside a polling station in Patharpratima's Gurudaspur area in South 24 Parganas.

The WBP cop has been identified as Kamal Ganguly (40), a resident of Bongaon in North 24 Parganas. Body has been sent for autopsy, investigation initiated.

BJP worker found hanging in Nandigram

One BJP worker Uday Dubey (48), a KGP IIT staffer, was found hanging in the balcony of his relative's house at Vetukia village in Nandigram on Thursday morning.

Family members claimed that local TMC leaders were torturing him mentally following which the man had committed suicide.  Police initiates probe, body sent for autopsy. TMC denies allegation against them.

EVM malfunctions reported from 150 polling booths

Reports of EVM malfunctions reported from at least 150 polling booths, including 43 in East Medinipur, 56 in West Medinipur and 45 in South 24 Parganas. All those EVMs have been replaced at voting is underway at those polling booths, according to ECI.

This happened between 6-10 am.

One TMC worker was held at Rajaramchak in Nandirgam for trying to enter a polling booth with a fake Voter ID. He was allegedly attempting to influence voters. He also pasted a fake ECI logo in his car.

The incident took place at booth number 173 in area 10 of Keshpur block.
