Disproportionate assets case: Assam DIG arrested

Guwahati/IBNS: The Assam Police on Tuesday arrested one of its Deputy Inspector General (DIG) for possessing disproportionate assets to his known sources of income.

The arrested DIG was identified as Rounak Ali Hazarika and he was suspended on July 20 last for travelling abroad several times since 2011 without obtaining permission from the Home department.

A team of CM’s Special Vigilance Cell led by Superintendent of Police (SP) Rosie Kalita arrested Hazarika from his residence at Hengrabari area of Guwahati.

According to the reports, information was received at the office of the Superintendent of Police, CM’s Special Vigilance Cell regarding disproportionate assets amassed by Rounak Ali Hazarika and accordingly the preliminary enquiry was initiated and thereafter a case was registered in the Vigilance PS under Section 13(1)(a)(b)/13(2) of Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018 as per approval of the Assam Chief Minister.

During enquiry it is found that Rounak Ali Hazarika had possessed immovable and movable assets which is disproportionate to his known sources of income during the period from 1992 to 2021.

The CM’s Special Vigilance team also found that Rounak Ali Hazarika incurred expenditure to the tune of Rs 1,74,12,974 as educational expenditure of his two children till date.

In a press release issued by the Superintendent of Police (SP) of CM’s Special Vigilance Cell stated that, international travel history of Rounak Ali Hazarika has been collected and it reveals that he had left the country and travelled abroad 9 times without permission from competent authority.

Apart from a salary account in State Bank of India, the officer and his family members have accounts in Axis Bank, Yes Bank etc and huge amounts are found to be deposited in cash while he was posted in Bongaigaon district during the period of 2019-2021.

He owned assets that were out of sync with his legal sources of income, occupied a public office and was in possession of disproportionate assets during the period of his office.

According to the reports, the percentage of his disproportionate assets has been found to be 164.80 percent.
