West Bengal hooch tragedy: Death toll reaches 13

Kolkata/East Midnapore, Sept 28 (IBNS): The toll in the West Bengal hooch tragedy rose to thirteen with the death of five more persons on Monday, reports said.

According to reports, over 30 people are still battling for live in hospital.

The tragedy struck as few men of two villages in East Midnapore district drunk liquor on Saturday evening and fell sick after consuming the spurious liquor. They were rushed to hospital nearby.

The parade of deaths started on Sunday at  Narikeldaha and Kiyarana villages of Tamluk sub-division in East Midnapore district.

East Midnapore SP Alok Rajoria told IBNS on Monday afternoon: "Our investigation and raids are still underway. Few samples have been sent for tests. After getting the test and postmortem reports, will clarify the exact reason of the deaths."

"We have arrested 16 in connection with this case so fare and are interrogating them," he added.

Meanwhile, local mob ransacked and set the house of local hooch supplier Manik Das, who is still absconding, on fire on Monday morning. Police force went to the spot and resorted to lathicharge to bring the situation under control.

However, TMC MP Subhendu Adhikary and BJP leader Joy Banerjee visited hospital to meet the sick persons on Sunday night and Monday respectively.
