Mumbai/IBNS: Filmmaker Sanjay Gupta, best known for films such as Kaante, Shootout at Lokhandwala and Kaabil, died on Friday after reportedly suffering a head injury at his home, media reports said.

Gupta was 59.

According to reports, the filmmaker fell in the kitchen at around 2:30 pm and sustained a head injury.

His wife and two sons were reportedly present at home when the incident occurred.

Early career and directorial debut

Sanjay Gupta made his directorial debut with Aatish: Feel the Fire (1994), starring Sanjay Dutt and Aditya Pancholi. He followed it with Ram Shastra (1995), featuring Jackie Shroff, Manisha Koirala and Aditya Pancholi, and Hameshaa (1997), starring Saif Ali Khan and Kajol.

His subsequent directorial ventures included the crime thriller Khauff (2000), starring Sanjay Dutt and Manisha Koirala, and Jung (2000), featuring Sanjay Dutt, Jackie Shroff and Aditya Pancholi.

Breakthrough with Kaante

Gupta achieved wider recognition with Kaante (2002), an action thriller featuring Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Suniel Shetty, Mahesh Manjrekar, Lucky Ali and Kumar Gaurav. Shot largely in Los Angeles, the film became one of his most recognised works.

He subsequently directed Musafir (2004), starring Anil Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, Sameera Reddy and Aditya Pancholi, followed by Zinda (2006), featuring Sanjay Dutt, John Abraham, Lara Dutta and Celina Jaitly.

In 2007, he directed the anthology film Dus Kahaniyaan, which featured multiple stories and an ensemble cast.

Mumbai underworld stories

Gupta remained closely associated with Mumbai's underworld stories through Shootout at Wadala (2013), starring John Abraham, Anil Kapoor, Kangana Ranaut and Tusshar Kapoor. The film was based on the 1982 Wadala shootout involving gangster Manya Surve.

He also produced Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), directed by Apoorva Lakhia, featuring Vivek Oberoi, Sanjay Dutt, Amitabh Bachchan and Suniel Shetty.

From Jazbaa to Kaabil

Moving beyond crime dramas, Gupta directed Jazbaa (2015), starring Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Irrfan Khan.

He later helmed Kaabil (2017), featuring Hrithik Roshan and Yami Gautam. The revenge thriller received considerable attention and emerged as a commercial success.

He returned to the Mumbai underworld genre with Mumbai Saga (2021), starring John Abraham, Emraan Hashmi, Suniel Shetty and Kajal Aggarwal.

His later directorial venture was The Miranda Brothers, a sports drama starring Harshvardhan Rane and Meezaan Jafri. The film revolved around two brothers pursuing football careers and was among his final projects as a filmmaker.

Work as a producer

Apart from directing, Gupta was associated with several films as a producer. His production credits included Plan (2004), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), Woodstock Villa (2008), Acid Factory (2009), Pankh (2010), Shootout at Wadala (2013), Jazbaa (2015), Mumbai Saga (2021) and Visfot (2024).

His production banner, White Feather Films, backed several projects during his career.
