CWG begins with a dazzling opening ceremony

Glasgow, July 24 (IBNS) The 2014 opening ceremony was officially opened with a colourful opening ceremony on Wednesday with thousands of athletes from 71 nations and territories participating in it at the Celtic Park on Wednesday.

A 40,000 capacity crowd in the stadium and billions across the globe witnessed the dancing and singing performances which made the opening ceremony special.

The ceremony marked the diversity of Glasgow.

The sporting event, which was last held in Indian capital New Delhi in 2010,  was declared open by the British Queen Elizabeth II.

More than 4,500 athletes from 71 nations will compete for the next 11 days for the three medals of honours for their nations.

Starting with India and ending with host Scotland, athletes from 71 nations paraded in the stadium. The Indian contingent was led by  shooter Vijay Kumar.

During the ceremony, a minute's silence for the victims of the Malaysian Airlines crash was observed.

Wearing armbands and carrying their  flag at half-mast the Malaysian team entered the stadium.

The  events will be held July 23  to Aug 3.
