Russian court fines Twitter for not pulling down posts violating regulations

Moscow/IBNS: A court in Moscow has slapped a fine of about $117,000 on microblogging site Twitter for not removing posts encouraging minors to participate in unauthorised rallies, said an AP report.

The court found Twitter guilty on three counts of violating regulations on restricting unlawful content and issued the order, the report stated, adding that it is the latest move against the US-based social media giant that is being used in Russia by the masses to voice their dissent.

Russia's state communication watchdog Roskomnadzor had threatened to ban Twitter if it failed to pull down illegal content.

Last month it also accused Twitter of failing to remove content encouraging suicide among children, information on drugs and child pornography. On Mach 10, the Russian watchdog announced that it was slowing down the speed of uploading photos and videos to the platform, said the AP report

In response Twitter contended that it has zero tolerance for content promoting child sexual abuse, drug sales and promotion of suicide, stated the report.

According to the report, in less than a week the deputy chief of Roskomnadzor Vadim Subbotin accused Twitter of not complying with the rules and warned that the site will be blocked if things continue like this.

Twitter has so far not issued any response to the court's ruling penalising it for non-compliance with the demands of the Russian authorities.
