Tamil Nadu to witness formation of first IT union in India?

The move is likely to be made in southern state of Tamil Nadu.

More than 100 software professionals have signed as members, sources who led the Cognizant protests were quoted as saying to NDTV, adding that the union will lobby for women's safety and protect members' rights by holding IT firms to labour laws.

Sources further old the news channel that though Tamil Nadu has an estimated 4.5 lakh employees in the IT space, many are reluctant to join the union because they worry their employers will disapprove or see them as trouble-makers.

In Tamil Nadu, nearly four lakh IT professionals are currently working in the sector, reports said.

Job cut incidents have hit the industry quite hard in India in recent times.

Software service firm Tech Mahindra has laid off nearly 1,000 employees in the current month, media reports said.
