Guwahati, Feb 15 (IBNS) : Assam's Kaziranga National Park (KNP) continue to be plagued by poaching as one more one-horned rhinoceros inside the park was killed in the wee hours of Wednesday.

The poachers took away its horn.

According to reports, poachers killed the female rhino at Tunikati forest camp area under Burhapahar range of the UNESCO World Heritage Site.

A top official of KNP said that forest guards found bullet injuries on the rhino carcass and also recovered 11 empty cartridges of AK-47 rifle and Insas rifle near it.

"It indicated that, poachers killed the rhino by using sophisticated weapons," a forest official said.

The incident occurred within 24 hours of a poacher being gunned down by Special Task Force (STF) personnel in Karbi Anglong district, near the national park.

Kaziranga has lost 93 one-horned rhinos due to poaching between 2011 and 2016.

During the same period, poachers killed 147 rhinos across the state.

The Union government has given permission to the Assam forest department to use drones for vigilance in the national park.
