COVID-19 death toll surge past 7,500-mark in Tamil Nadu

Chennai/UNI The number of novel coronavirus deaths in Tamil Nadu surged past 7,500-mark on Wednesday, after the state reported 98 more deaths related to the virus.

The overall fatalities from the viral outbreak stood at 7,516 till date. The state had reported its first COVID-19 death on March 25.

The cumulative tally of positive cases climbed to 4,39,959 with 5,990 fresh cases reported during the last 24 hours.

The health department in its bulletin said of the 98 deaths, 57 were reported in government hospitals and 41 in private hospitals.

Of the 5,990 total cases today, 5,962 were indigenous cases and 28 were imported cases – those who returned from abroad and other states by air and by road.

The total number of active cases stood at 52,380.

A total of 75,829 samples were tested in the last 24 hours by RT-PCR, taking the total number of samples tested till date to 49,64,141.

With 5,891 patients discharged on Wednesday, a record number of 3,80,063 patients have recovered from the infection till date.

Chennai recorded 1,025 cases on Wednesday, taking the total cases to 1,37,732.

The neighbouring district of Chengalpattu recorded 390 cases, Thiruvallur 285 while Kancheepuram reported 133 cases.
