Chennai, Nov 17 (IBNS) Chennai continued to reel under floods triggered by incessant downpour as defence personnel carried out rescue and relief operations evacuating the marooned and airdropping food packets to the affected people, reports said.

According to Indian Air Force officials, 22 people, including 12 infants were  rescued to safety while food packets and water were airdropped from a helicopter that took off from the Tambaram air base.

Normal life continued to be seriously affected in vast parts of Tamil Nadu as rain continued to pour for days inundating large areas.
The situation has forced the authorities to shut down educational institutions while surface transport continued to suffer.

So far 71 people have died in rain-related incidents.

The weather office forecast heavy downpour in the next three days in Tamil Nadu,  Puducherry and coastal Andhra Pradesh.
