Droupadi Murmu swears in as India's 15th President. All you need to know

Murmu, who was once a tribal face of the current ruling BJP, was sworn in by Chief Justice of India NV Ramana in Parliament's Central Hall at 10:15 am.

Murmu's swearing-in ceremony was attended by outgoing President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his ministers, all MPs et al.

Swearing in as the President, Murmu said, "I have been elected to the post at a time when the nation is gearing up to celebrate its 75th Independence Day."

"Reaching the highest post of the country is an achievement of every Dalit person of this country," she said.

She said it is the beauty of the democracy of the country that a girl from a poor family can also become a President of the country.

Ahead of her scheduled swearing in ceremony, Murmu paid homage to Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi at Rajghat.

1. Draupadi Murmu was born in a Santali tribal family of Odisha.
