Is this secularism? PM Modi attacks TMC's Mahua Moitra over 'Hindu consolidation' remark

Kanpur/UNI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday attacked Trinamool Congress (TMC) MP Mahua Moitra, who in a recent interview said her party has prevented the consolidation of Hindu votes in Goa by tying up with Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) as the coastal state is polled on Monday.

Moitra, who is TMC's Goa in-charge, told The Times of India, "We have to function as per the reality of Goa. In the North, our alliance partner MGP is contesting 13-14 seats, which Congress isn’t capable of winning.

"In those 14 seats, MGP is head-to-head with BJP. We have prevented a consolidation of  the Hindu votes by tying up with MGP."

Addressing a rally in Kanpur Dehat, Modi without taking Moitra's name said, "Yesterday I saw an interview... A leader of Mamata Banerjee's party was asked why they are fighting polls in Goa where the party has no existence.

"The reply given by the leader should be noted by the Election Commission, by voters across India, and voters in UP as well..."

"The leader said 'we want to divide Hindu votes in Goa.' Is this secularism? You are openly saying we want to divide Hindu votes," the Prime Minister said.

Reacting to the Prime Minister's attack, Moitra tweeted, "Saffron sahibs are masters of twisting truth to suit own convenience. Am happy that on this otherwise dull Valentine’s Day I have given Hon’ble  PM & his troll army something to be excited about…."

Modi also expressed confidence over the BJP winning the polls in Uttar Pradesh and in other states and claimed that all castes and communities were supporting the BJP.

"The voting in the first phase (in Uttar Pradesh) and the trends of the second phase have made it very clear that the BJP's (Adityanath) Yogi government is coming back to power," he said.

"Every caste and community voted for the BJP in the first phase and now in the second phase as well," he said.

"Women have taken the charge of making the BJP victorious. My Muslim sisters are also stepping out to bless Modi," he said.
