Srinagar: Militants shot dead a policeman in Jammu and Kashmir's Anantnag district on Saturday evening, official sources said.

The attack occurred in Hassapora in Anantnag district, leaving the policeman critically wounded.

He was rushed to a hospital where doctors declared him dead.

The slain policeman was identified as Head Constable Ali Mohammad Ganie, a resident of Anantnag.

“The injured police personnel was immediately evacuated to nearby hospital, however he succumbed to his injuries and attained martyrdom,” a police spokesman said.

“Officers attending the terror crime spot learnt that Head Constable was shot at by the terrorists near his residential house at Hasanpora Tabala area of Bijbehara Anantnag,” he said.

Ganie was posted at Police Station Kulgam.

Soon after the incident, security forces cordoned off the area and launched a hunt to trace the attackers.

“Police has registered a case in this regard under relevant sections of law and investigation is in progress and officers continue to work to establish the full circumstances of this terror crime,” the spokesman said.

On Friday, an off duty policeman had a miraculous escape when militants fired at him in Srinagar's Batamaloo area.
