Locals vandalise West Bengal school after principal asks girls not to wear burqa and hijab, 18 detained
Locals vandalised a school in West Bengal's Muslim-majority Murshidabad district on Saturday when the principal of the institution allegedly forbade girl students from wearing a hijab and burqa in the classroom.
Eighteen people have been detained in connection with the vandalization of the school so far.
The incident took place at Bahutali High School in Murshidabad's Suti area, reports India Today.
According to reports, the principal of the school on Friday directed the students not to come to school wearing hijab/burqa or their name would be removed from the school registry.
Next day, locals, including guardians of the students, gathered around the school and started vandalising the property. The block development officer (BDO) and the police rushed to the school and controlled the situation, reports India Today.
Police reportedly lobbed tear gas shells to bring the situation under control.
The incident occured in West Bengal at a time when a row continued over wearing hijab in high school and college campuses in certain parts of Karnataka.
