Kolkata, Feb 26 (UNI) Kolkata Municipal Corporation has decided to start waste segregation at source, considered as the most important part of waste management, in 20 wards.

The project which is now in its initial stage will be extended to all the 144 wards in phased manner over the next three months, city mayor Firhad Hakim said.

Under the project each household would require to discard waste in two bins---green and white, provided by KMC. Biodegradable waste and non-biodegradable waste would have to be collected in the green bin and white bin, respectively.

Biodegradable waste include vegetable peels, egg shells, bones, fish scales, tea leaves, dry flowers, etc. Non-biodegradable waste include rubber, paper, plastic, wood, glass, metals, etc.

Green bin waste would be collected daily by KMC, but white bin items would be collected every alternate day. KMC would recycle the green bin wastes at Dhapa landfill site.

In Kolkata, the wastes are collected and brought to compactor stations.

These stations were introduced by TMC-run KMC and are he first ones in the country.
KMC also plans to completely replace hand pulled garbage collection vehicles with battery operated vehicles, by the end of the next year. Battery operated garbage collection vehicles are already in use in some parts of the city
