SC concludes hearing on triple talaq, reserves verdict

New Delhi, May 18 (IBNS) : The Supreme Court on Thursday finished hearing the triple talaq case and reserved its verdict on whether the practice is constitutionally valid, reports said.

The issue was heard for six days by a five-member all-faith bench of the top court following a clutch of petitions challenging triple talaq, polygamy and 'nikah halala'.

The judges were drawn from different religious communities- Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, and Parsi.

On the last day of the hearing, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB), which is defending the practice of  triple talaq  said it is ready to issue an advisory to all qazis (Islamic jurists) to ascertain women's view on triple talaq and put it in the nikahnaama (contract of the Islamic marriage).

Senior lawyer Kapil Sibal appeared for AIMPLB. He argued that triple talaq is a matter of belief and hence the question of its constitutional validity does not arise.
