Supreme Court warns of 'serious view' of demolitions in Delhi's Jahangirpuri after its pause order
New Delhi/IBNS: The Supreme Court has said it will take a serious view of all demolitions that took place in Delhi's riot-hit Jahangirpuri area after its order pausing the drive was passed a day ago, media reports said.
The top court said as quoted by NDTV, "We will take a serious view of all demolitions that took place after the Supreme Court decision was communicated to the Mayor."
The court said it will take up the case after two weeks.
Senior lawyer Dushyant Dave, who is representing the Jahangirpuri petitioners, claimed the Mayor has acted after receiving a complaint from the Delhi Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief.
Dave said the demolition drive was conducted without prior notice.
The Supreme Court was told that "a particular section of society is being targeted.''
The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered a halt to the demolition of "illegal constructions" in the area where communal violence had erupted earlier, directing the municipal authorities to maintain the status quo.
"Maintain status quo, list the matter before the appropriate bench tomorrow," CJI Ramana said after hearing a petition by Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind and others.
The civic officials in Jahangirpuri, however, insisted that they have not received a copy of the order and proceeded to bulldoze not only several shops but also the gates and the wall of a mosque which was at the centre of the controversy during Saturday's clash.
After a two-hour stand-off, CPI-M leader Brinda Karat was seen blocking a bulldozer and waving the copy of the court order.
The petitioner said the use of bulldozers following communal clashes targeting one community was disturbing.
