Amaravati/IBNS: Giving a further push to decentralisation of developmental schemes, Andhra Pradesh, a south Indian state, added 13 new districts effective from Monday, media reports said.

With the new addition, the number of districts in the state went up to 26.

Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy launched the new districts via video conference on Monday.

The process of forming the new districts was completed on Friday.

The government said in a statement as quoted by the media, "With the formation of smaller districts – distance from the district centre to remote and border villages will be reduced… District administration will come closer to the people… Increased accountability as the Government comes closer to people."

It further said, "District Police Officers and all the other Government Departments including their camp offices will be in the same premises, thus doing away with the hassle of people travelling miles together for their work in different Government offices."

In the 2019 assembly elections, which the ruling YSRCP had won, Reddy had promised his party, if voted to power, will make every Lok Sabha constituency a district.
