Melbourne/IBNS: The opening match of the upcoming season of the Big Bash League (BBL) will be played in India, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced during his meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday.

The announcement was made by the two leaders during their visit to the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as part of PM Modi's Australia tour.

Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers to Open BBL Season in Chennai

The opening match of the next BBL season will see Melbourne Renegades take on Perth Scorchers in Chennai on December 12.

The move marks the entry of the first foreign franchise cricket league to be hosted in India.

Highlighting the significance of the development, Prime Minister Modi said that hosting international sporting leagues in India ensures wider reach and greater viewership.

"The hosting of any sporting league in India guarantees bigger reach and viewership," PM Modi said.

India-Australia Sports Partnership to Expand

Addressing the gathering at the MCG, Prime Minister Modi highlighted the role of sports in strengthening ties between nations and bringing communities together.

He said the roadmap agreed upon by India and Australia would help both countries diversify their sporting partnership and create new opportunities for cooperation.
