Cyclone hits Vanuatu, several feared dead

Port Vila , Mar 14 (IBNS): Dozens are feared dead as super tropical cyclone Pam hit Vanuatu on Saturday, reports said.

"The storm reached peak intensity on Friday night with winds in the eye region averaging 250 to 270 kmph with gusts to 340 kmph," unicef.org.nz reported on Saturday.

UNICEF Pacific Communications Specialist Alice Clements was quoted as saying by the website: "We have some very unconfirmed reports of casualties from the outer islands as well but we're waiting to get official confirmation on those, which is very sad news if it's true.”

Power lines are down and communications are limited in the island nation after it was hit by the cyclone which is being considered to be one of the most powerful one in the South Pacific in recent times.

Meanwhile, UK PM David Cameron has offered 'immediate support' the storm-hit nation and tweeted: "My thoughts are with those affected by #CyclonePam. We have offered immediate support to Vanuatu."
