Drought emergency declared in Italy

Rome/UNI: Italy has declared a state of emergency in five northern regions surrounding the Po River, country's longest river, as they face the worst drought in 70 years.

Emilia-Romagna, Friuli Venezia Giulia, Lombardy, Piedmont and Veneto will be given €36.5 million in emergency funds to tackle the water shortage, according to BBC

Agricultural union Coldiretti said that the drought has threatened more than 30 percent of Italy's agricultural produce.

The unusual hot weather and low rainfall across winter and spring have led to water shortages in northern Italy.

On Monday, the government said, "The state of emergency is aimed at managing the current situation with extraordinary means and powers."

It further said that further measures will be taken if the situation does not improve.
