Tel Aviv: At least two people died and several others were hurt as a terrorist opened fire in a bar in Israel's Tel Aviv city on Thursday, media reports said.

The shooting took place on Dizengoff Street, turning an area crowded with people out for Thursday night at bars, restaurants and cafes lining the popular thoroughfare into a scene of chaos and panic, reports The Times of Israel.

As the street filled with ambulances and rescuers, police carried out searches for the gunman, who witnesses told the newspaper fled the scene and disappeared into nearby alleys, going door to door and telling people to stay inside and lock their doors.

According to reports, the attack started when the gunman walked up popular bar Ilka and opened fire inside the venue.

“We dove under the tables and people started crying, it was horrible,” Evelyn Gertz, 34, who was having dinner next door told The Times of Israel.
