Tokyo Olympics: Weightlifter Mirabai Chanu wins silver

Tokyo/IBNS: Registering India's first medal in Tokyo Olympics 2020, weightlifter Mirabai Chanu has won a silver in the women's 49 kg category.

China's Zhihu Hou clinched gold.

Chanu lifted the 49 kg and 87 kg successfully but failed to lift 89 kg placing herself at the second spot while Zhihu lifted 94 kg to clinch the top position.

Congratulating Chanu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "Could not have asked for a happier start to @Tokyo2020! India is elated by @mirabai_chanu’s stupendous performance. Congratulations to her for winning the Silver medal in weightlifting. Her success motivates every Indian."

Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri tweeted, "You didn't just lift weights and pick a medal there, champion. You lifted a nation that needed to find joy and you did it with the widest smile. Take a bow."

India's Olympic gold medalist Abhinav Bindra tweeted, "Many many Congratulations to @mirabai_chanu on winning India’s first medal at #Tokyo2020. Such An inspiring performance that will be remembered for a long time to come and will inspire generations. Well done."
