Canada: Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux becomes Quebec’s 1st, and Canada's 2nd world junior chess champion
Montreal: Eighteen-year-old Shawn Rodrigue-Lemieux from Montreal’s Hochelaga-Maisonneuve neighborhood has become the first Quebecer and only the second Canadian to bag the World Youth Chess Champion title.
Last week, Shawn beat players from 54 countries at the world under-18 chess championships held in Romania.
Scoring nine points out of 11, seven victories, and four draws, Shawn defeated Kazybek Nogerbek of Kazakhstan, who finished second in the rankings.
He posted a draw against Marius Fromm of Germany, who finished third.
“It’s not really something I expected. The start of the tournament wasn’t so great but suddenly, the wins just kept coming and at the end, it was great, ” Rodrigue-Lemieux was quoted as saying in the media.
