Dipa Karmakar rewrites history by becoming first Indian gymnast to win gold medal in Asian Senior Championships

Winning the women's vault, Indian gymnast Dipa Karmakar made India proud by becoming the first sportsperson from the country to clinch a gold medal in the Asian Senior Championships on Sunday.

On the medal-winning day in Uzbekistan,  the Indian gymnast scored an average 13.566 in the vault final.

The silver and bronze medals went to  North Koreans Kim Son Hyang (13.466) and Jo Kyong Byol (12.966).

She won the bronze medal in the same event in 2015.

Dipa summed up her emotional state in her X post following the gold medal victory where she said: "It's been a long journey but we are finally here. Grateful."

The Sports Authority of India congratulated the Indian gymnast and posted on X: "History created at The Asian Gymnastics Championship Dipa Karmakar becomes the st gymnast to winat this prestigious championship, topping the podium in women's vault."

"Earlier, her best performance at the event was when she gave us in 2015!Inspirational, Dipa! Congratulations on the #Gol," SAI said.

Dipa became the first Indian gymnast to compete in the Olympics and finished fourth in the women's vault at Rio 2016.

The best display by any Indian woman gymnast in the Olympics so far.
