Brisbane/IBNS: India's spin bowling legend Ravichandran Ashwin on Wednesday announced his retirement from international cricket in the middle of the Border Gavaskar Trophy 2024.

In a shock announcement, Ashwin accompanied India captain Rohit Sharma to the press conference after the third Test between India and Australia ended in a draw to make the announcement.

"This will be my last day as an Indian cricketer in all formats at the international level," said Ashwin at the press conference.

"I do feel there's a bit of punch left in me as a cricketer, but I'd like to express that, showcase that in club-level cricket," he added.

Ashwin will fly out of Australia on Thursday, confirmed Rohit at the presser.

The 38-year-old, who made his Test debut in 2011, picked 536 wickets in 105 matches in the longest format of the game.

The right-arm off-spinner was the fastest bowler to get 300 Test wickets in terms of the number of innings.

Apart from his bowling mastery, Ashwin was also considered an allrounder for his significant batting display over the years down the order in Team India.

The former number one Test bowler also has six Test hundreds and 14 fifties under his belt.

In 116 One Day Internationals, Ashwin picked 156 wickets at a bowling average of 33.20.
