Novak Djokovic gets medical 'exemption permission' to play Australian Open
Melbourne: Serbian Tennis star Novak Djokovic on Tuesday confirmed that he will be playing the Australian Open tournament this month after receiving a medical exemption permission from having a Covid-19 vaccination.
All players and staff at the tournament must be vaccinated or have an exemption granted by an expert independent panel, reports BBC.
Djokovic, a nine-time Australian Open winner, has not spoken publicly about his vaccination status, the British media reported.
The showpiece event will begin in Melbourne from Jan 17.
In his Instagram page, Novak said: "Happy New Year, everybody! Wishing you all health, love, and happiness in every present moment and may you feel love & respect towards all beings on this wonderful planet."
"I’ve spent fantastic quality time with my loved ones over the break and today I’m heading Down Under with an exemption permission. Let’s go 2022 !!" the player wrote.
The Tennis tournament will be played at a time when the world is witnessing a surge in COVID-19 cases.
