Paris/Xinhua: Defending champion Rafael Nadal romped into the semifinals of the French Open in the early hours of Wednesday with a late-night win over Italy's Jannik Sinner.

The Spaniard, who is seeking his 13th title at Roland Garros, defeated Sinner 7-6 (7-4), 6-4, 6-1 to set up a rematch with Diego Schwartzman on Friday.

The Argentinian bested Nadal in the Rome Masters quarter-finals last month for his first win against the world number two.

Earlier, Schwartzman knocked out third seed Dominic Thiem in a thrilling marathon battle which lasted over five hours, winning 7-6 (7-1), 5-7, 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

The men's quarter-finals will also continue on Wednesday with world number one Novak Djokovic facing Spain's Pablo Carreno Busta and Greek fifth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas playing Russian Andrey Rublev.
