Rahul, Vijay steady ship after Parthiv's dismissal
Johannesburg, Jan 25 (IBNS): After bowling out South Africa for 194 runs, the Indian batters showed more resolve in the second innings, albeit they lost the wicket of Parthiv Patel, to end the day with 49 runs for the loss of a solitary wicket, here on Thursday, day two of the third and final Test match of the series.
South Africa started the day with six runs for the loss of Aiden Markram and played reasonably well in the inaugural session, losing just a wicket, to keep the Indian bowlers at bay on a green top.
But it quickly changed for the hosts in the post lunch session as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah bowled immaculately to upset the home team.
Eventually, the hosts managed a six-run lead over the Indians.
For the hosts, Hashim Amla top scored with 61. The veteran faced 121 balls during his essay, which was encrusted with seven boundaries.
Amla received able support from South African quicks, Vernon Philander and Kagiso Rabada, as they chipped in with 35 and 30 important runs.
For India, their latest debutant Jasprit Bumrah picked his maiden five-wicket-haul in Test cricket.
Pacemen Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Mohammed Shami too picked up 3, 1 and 1 wickets respectively.
In the second innings, the Indians surprised many by pushing Parthiv Patel to open the batting with Murali Vijay.
However, the Gujarat-born batsman made a breezy 16 before departing.
Vijay (13) and Rahul (16) are at the crease and will resume batting when play starts on Friday.
