Kolkata, Nov 13 (IBNS): In what can be described as a dream comeback, Rohit Sharma proved his prodigal class by becoming the highest individual run-getter in history in an one-day international (ODI) innings when he scored 264 runs in the fourth ODI here at Eden Gardens.

Rohit surpassed another Indian flamboyant batsman Virender Sehwag (219), which was till date holding the record.

He also became the first player to register two double hundred innings in career.

The 27-year-old Indian had scored 209 against Australia in November last year.

Spectators present at the iconic Eden Gardens were mesmeried by the elegance of Rohit's strokeplay.

It is noteworthy to mention that Rohit was making a comeback after finger injury which he sustained in England in August.

India amassed a whooping total of 404/5 in their 50 overs with a staggering run-rate of 8.08, courtesy Rohit's "HIT".

Sri Lanka team on the other hand will surely rue the day, when they missed Rohit's catch, a sitter at the third man boundary, when the Mumbaikar was just at 4 runs.

Rohit capitalised on the chance and went on to break one record after another.

In fact, Lanka players missed three catches of Rohit. The rest two occured when he surpassed double ton.

Rohit's innings was ornamented with 33 boundaries and 9 sixes.

His 264 runs came in 173 balls with a strike-rate of 152.60.

His count of 33 fours is the highest by any one in a single innings in ODIs.

Also a total of 42 boundaries (fours and sixes) is the highest by anyone.

Rohit now has the highest score in List A cricket (ODIs are included in this list) for an Indian. In 2013, Shikhar Dhawan smashed 248 for India A against South Africa A.

India have gone past the score of 400 fifth time now in ODIs.

To put things in perspective, Rohit got to his 50 from 72, his 100 from 100, 150 from 125, 200 from 151 and 250 from 166.

In other words, his 50s took 72 balls, 28 balls, 25 balls, 26 balls and 15 balls.

India captain MS Dhoni has tweeted his appreciation after watching Rohit Sharma record the highest individual score in one-day international history.

"Very well batted Rohit.thats Rohit for everyone, sheer talent.Enjoy and Witness the class in action," MSD said.

Zaheer Khan said, "Well done brothaman @ImRo45 !!! Really enjoyed watching u bat ! Way to go buddy ...."

Former cricketer turned commentator VVS LAxman said, "Congrats @ImRo45 on a fantastic 100. the way he is playing there is a good chance for him to get his 2nd double hundred :):#talent."

The Indian team gave Rohit a guard of honour as he walks back with the highest ODI score ever.
