Serena Williams defeated by unseeded Roberta Vinci

New York, Sept 11 (IBNS): Ending her hopes of winning the US Open title, Roberta Vinci of Italy defeated world number one Serena Williams in the women's semi- finals here on Friday.

In a tightly fought contest, unseeded Vinci ended Williams' hopes of calendar Grand Slam by beating her 2-6 6-4 6-4.

In another semi-finals  clash, Flavia Pennetta defeated Simona Halep 6-1 6-3 to reach the final of the  Grand Slam.

“I didn’t think to be so far in the tournament,” Pennetta  was quoted as saying by usopen.org.

“It’s amazing to be here today. I don’t know how to handle all the pressure I have, but I think I played really well," she said.

Following the two victories, all Italian women's final will be held on Sunday.
