On July 18, 2016, 10 Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel belonging to the Commando Battalion for Resolute Action (CoBRA) were killed and five others were injured in a Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) orchestrated Improvised Explosive Device (IED) blast and encounter in the Chakarbanda-Dumarinala forests of Aurangabad District. Three Maoists were also killed in the encounter. Arms and ammunition, including an AK-47 rifle, Indian Small Arms System (INSAS) rifle and Under Barrel Grenade Launcher (UBGL), were also recovered from the encounter site. Commenting on the incident, Bihar Director General of Police (DGP) P.K. Thakur disclosed that eight paramilitary troopers were killed immediately and two of the five wounded died in a hospital.

On June 9, 2016, an armed squad of suspected Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) cadres killed a man for allegedly resisting when two 'commanders' of the outfit tried to rape his wife in Aurangabad District. Awadhesh Singh Bhokta was shot seven times by an AK-47 assault rifle at Gewal Bigha village in the Madanpur Police Station area of the District. Giving details Bhokta's wife stated, "Maoist 'commanders' Prasadji and Nawalji had been raping her for the last one month. This was opposed by her husband. A dozen armed Maoists raided their house on Thursday [June 9], picked up Bhokta, took him to a secluded place and shot him dead." The Maoists, meanwhile, in some leaflets left behind, claimed that Bhokta was killed for being a 'police informer'. The leaflets also threatened to teach a lesson to Aurangabad Member of Parliament Sushil Kumar Singh and Member of Legislative Council Rajan Kumar Singh. Aurangabad Superintendent of Police (SP) Babu Ram, denying the Maoists charge, stated, "Maoists have killed an innocent person. Their claim that Bhokta was a police informer is baseless."

Mahto's body was recovered along with one looted Police rifle, one .303 regular weapon, one 8mm pistol and one country made pistol. Mahto was a 'member' of the Purvi Bihar Purvottar Jharkhand Special Area Committee (PBPJSAC, Eastern Bihar North Eastern Jharkhand Special Area Committee) and wanted in 20 cases in Bihar and over three dozen cases in Jharkhand. He carried a head money of INR 2.5 million in Jharkhand and INR 500,000 in Bihar. Confirming the incident Inspector General of Police (IG), Operations, S.M. Khopde said the killing of Chirag was a big feat.
