'Gaza war to continue with or without international support': Israel
Jerusalem/IBNS: Israel Wednesday declared its determination to continue its Gaza war "with or without international support after it came under mounting pressure even from its key supporter United States.
Now in its third month, the war was launched in response to the unprecedented attacks on Israel by the Palestinian militant group Hamas on October 7 that Israeli officials say left 1,200 people killed.
The war has turned Gaza into ruins, killing more than 18,600 people, mostly women, and children, according to the latest toll from the Hamas-run health ministry.
It has also caused "unparallelled" damage to its roads, schools and hospitals.
The UN General Assembly, in an Emergency Special Session on Tuesday over the ongoing crisis in Gaza, adopted a resolution, demanding an “immediate humanitarian ceasefire”, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and well as “ensuring humanitarian access”.
It passed with a large majority of 153 in favour and 10 against, with 23 abstentions.
The resolution also reiterated the General Assembly's demand that all parties comply with their obligations under international law, including international humanitarian law, “notably with regard to the protection of civilians”.
Before the resolution, two amendments making specific reference to extremist group Hamas were voted down by members.
Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden on Tuesday targeted Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu and his coalition government for not supporting the two-state solution and said the country was losing global support due to “indiscriminate bombing” in Gaza.
"He’s (Benjamin Netanyahu) a good friend, but I think he has to change and — with this government," Biden said while addressing an event.
"This government in Israel is making it very difficult for him to move," he said.
