Transgender rights welcomed by most Canadians
The survey showed 84 per cent of the people said that gender identity should not be discriminated under the Canadian Human Rights Act, and Canadians should "accept, accommodate, and move on."
The poll "paints a picture of an accommodating, tolerant society – one that views increasing acceptance of transgender people as a sign of social progress," said the institute in a statement.
According to 59 per cent of people, if a third option to indicate gender is not included in their identification cards, then the gender option should be eliminated.
To resolve the controversies over the transgender bathroom issues, CBC News conducted a survey among students across the country get their opinion where students who used those bathrooms said their opinions have been ignored.
When genderless bathroom issues reached Vancouver, the School Board trustees passed a favoring vote towards the LGBTQ (Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer) community.
The new policy permitted single-stall, gender neutral washrooms in all school buildings. In this way the gender of the child could not be disclosed and eliminates the practice of segregating students by their sex.
According to sources, Dr. Ann Travers, Associate Professor of Sociology at Simon Fraser University, said that the turnout at the meeting did not surprise her.
To protect transgender people, the B.C. government had taken steps to introduce a bill to add "gender identity and expression" to the Human Rights Code.
The proposed change was applauded by dozens of transgender people and advocates in Victoria, including 13-year-old Tru Wilson.
Tru, born as a boy, attended B.C. Catholic school and expected to be treated as a girl, the gender she identified with. "Now it is crystal clear that we can't be discriminated against, and it's such a revolution for our community," Tru said
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau confirmed that his government will move forward with new legislation to protect the rights of transgender Canadians.
