Washington/UNI: US State department spokesperson Morgan Ortagus has condemned Iran's move to detain UK Ambassador Rob Macaire's and called for a public apology by the Iranian regime.

"The Iranian regime arrested the British ambassador to Iran. This violates the Vienna Convention, which the regime has a notorious history of violating. We call on the regime to formally apologize to the UK for violating his rights and to respect the rights of all diplomats," Morgan Ortagus said in a tweet.

Macaire was arrested for several hours for organizing and participating in protests on Saturday evening in Tehran.

According to Tasnim news agency, Macaire was in a protest rally in front of a university in time of arrest.

He was freed a few hours later but will be summoned tomorrow for further explanations.
