AIIMS Delhi server down after suspected ransomware attack

Delhi/IBNS:  India’s premier All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi might have suffered a ransomware attack, the hospital said Wednesday, adding that all its sections are working manually.

In the evening, the hospital issued a statement that the National Informatics Centre is working to restore the system. "It has informed that this may be a ransomware attack... (which) will be investigated by the appropriate authorities," the statement said.

"Measures are being taken to restore the digital services and support is being sought from Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and National Informatics Centre," the statement read.

AIIMS is the country’s largest referral hospital, which caters to 1.5 million outpatients and 80,000 inpatients every year.

According to an NDTV report, the hospital’s registration department is the worst hit, as hundreds of people queue up since dawn to register for treatment in the hospital.

The smart lab, report generation, billing and appointment systems are also affected, the report added.

"AIIMS and NIC will take precautions to prevent such future attacks," the hospital said in the statement.

AIIMS was established in New Delhi in 1956 as an institution of national importance. The computer facility in the hospital was launched in 1978.
