G20 Summit: Narendra Modi discusses trade, mobility, defence, security with British PM Rishi Sunak

Bali: Indian PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday met his British counterpart Rishi Sunak and they had discussion on important sectors of collaboration such as trade, mobility, defence and security, officials said.

This was the first time Modi met Sunak since he took charge as the PM of the UK.

They met on the sidelines of the G-20 Summit in Bali.

The Prime Minister congratulated PM Sunak on assuming office, PMO India said in a statement.

"The two leaders expressed satisfaction at the state of the wide-ranging India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and progress on the Roadmap 2030 for Future Relations. The two leaders appreciated the importance of working together in bilateral and multilateral forums including G20 and the Commonwealth," PMO India said in a statement.

Meanwhile, PM Modi described his meeting with Sunak as 'great'.

" Was great to meet PM @RishiSunakin Bali. India attaches great importance to robust ties. We discussed ways to increase commercial linkages, raise the scope of security cooperation in context of India’s defence reforms and make people-to-people ties even stronger," he tweeted.

The United Kingdom has given a go-ahead to the scheme facilitating 3,000 young professionals from India to travel annually to the country and work for upto two years following a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his British counterpart Rishi Sunak.

The age limit for the professionals is 18-30.

A tweet by the British Prime Minister's handle reads, "Today the UK-India Young Professionals Scheme was confirmed, offering 3,000 places to 18–30 year-old degree educated Indian nationals to come to the UK to live and work for up to two years."

Rishi Sunak tweeted in Hindi and English which read: "United by friendship."
