Mumbai/IBNS: Veteran actress Sandhya, best remembered for her iconic performances in Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje and Pinjara, passed away on Friday at the age of 94, family sources confirmed.

Her funeral was held at Vaikunth Dham in Shivaji Park, Dadar, Mumbai, and was attended by close family members, friends, and admirers, according to an India Today report.

Though the cause of death has not been officially announced, reports suggest she had been suffering from age-related ailments.

Born as Vijaya Deshmukh, Sandhya became one of the defining faces of Indian cinema’s golden era.

She was married to legendary filmmaker V. Shantaram, with whom she collaborated on several landmark films that continue to hold a special place in Indian film history.

V. Shantaram discovered her while casting for Amar Bhoopali (1952), marking Sandhya’s debut in the role of a vocalist.

She went on to star in a series of acclaimed films, including Do Aankhen Barah Haath, Navrang, Stree, Sehra, Angara, Ladki Sahyadri Ki, Jal Bin Machhli Nritya Bin Bijli, Pinjara, and Chandanachi Choli Ang Ang Jali.

One of her most memorable roles was in Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje (1955), where she played Neela, a devoted dancer.

According to the India Today report, Sandhya wasn't formally trained in classical dance. She underwent rigorous preparation under co-star Gopi Krishna.

Her portrayal in Pinjara (1972), directed by V. Shantaram, further cemented her status as a powerhouse performer known for her grace and emotional depth.

In 2009, Sandhya made a rare public appearance at the V. Shantaram Awards ceremony, commemorating 50 years of Navrang.

Through her performances, Sandhya defined an era of Indian cinema where art, music, and storytelling seamlessly merged. Her legacy as an actress and dancer continues to inspire generations of performers.
