Himachal Pradesh: 4,324 migratory birds, 215 others found dead due to suspected Bird Flu
Shimla/UNI: As many as 4,324 migratory and 215 other birds were found dead of suspected bird flu at Pong Dam Wildlife Sanctuary and other parts of the state, officials confirmed on Monday.
Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, while presiding over a meeting to take stock of the situation arising from the Avian Influenza here, said that emphasis should be laid on information, education and communication (IEC) to sensitise the people of the state, regarding adopting safety measures to check the further spread of bird flu.
Thakur said the ban had been imposed on the import of poultry products for a week from other states, in order to ensure that infected products do not enter the hill state.
Till date, about 4324 migratory birds have died from flu and these birds were being buried as per the protocol, to prevent the spread of the virus, added the Chief Minister.
He said that about 65 rapid response teams of the Animal Husbandry and Wildlife departments were regularly monitoring the Pong Dam and adjoining areas.
Keeping in view the intensity of Bird Flu, samples of poultry have been sent to RDDL Jalandhar by the Animal Husbandry Department.
The Chief Minister further said that 1,000 dead domestic poultry birds were found dumped in Dharampur sub- division of district Solan and these birds were disposed of by deep burial.
The area was being sanitised, as per the protocol and samples sent to the RDDL Jalandhar for diagnosis, he added.
Thakur said that 215 other birds have been found dead in various parts of the state till date from suspected bird flu.
The Chief Minister directed the officers to keep a strict vigil on birds alongside reservoirs and told them to sensitise people about proper handling of poultry products.
He said it was important to spread awareness among the people about preventive measures regarding bird flu and directed the concerned officers to take necessary steps in this direction.
Thakur further urged the people to inform the Animal Husbandry and Wildlife Departments if any bird was found dead in their areas.
