India continues to witness COVID-19 surge: 62,258 new cases recorded

New Delhi: India continued to witness surge in COVID-19 cases as  62,258 new cases were recorded in the past 24 hours, as per Ministry of Health released data on Saturday.

The new COVID-19 figures were released by the Ministry on a day when Assam and West Bengal is voting in the first phase of the Assembly polls.

During the last 24 hours, 291 people also died due to the virus which is believed to have originated in China in 2019.

The total death toll due to the disease now stands at 1,61,240.

There are 4,52,647 active cases in the country at present.
