India's Covid-19 cases cross 1.06 crore with over 15,000 new infections

New Delhi/UNI: A total of 15,223 fresh infections were registered in the past 24 hours taking the country's tally to 1,06,10,883, as per the Union Health Ministry update on Thursday.

For the past 14 days, the country has been recording less than 20,000 daily new infections even as the toll remained below 300-mark for the past 24 days.

There are 1,92,308 active cases of which 72 per cent is concentrated in Kerala, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, West Bengal.

As per ministry data, with 151 people succumbing in the past 24 hours, the death toll from the contagion has increased to 1,52,869, while 1,02,65,706 have recovered from the infection.

The national recovery rate has risen to 96.70 per cent while the fatality rate stands at 1.44 per cent, according to the Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, India's vaccination drive gathered momentum with 1,31,649 people being vaccinated yesterday taking the total number of vaccinations to 8,06,484.

According to the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), 7,80,835 samples were tested on Wednesday, taking the total samples tested upto Jan 20, 2021 to 18,93,47,782 crores.

The nationwide immunisation drive began across the country on Jan 16.
