South African variant of coronavirus found in four people in India, Brazilian variant in one: Govt
New Delhi: The Indian government on Tuesday confirmed few cases of the highly infectious South African and Brazilian strains of the coronavirus have been detected in the country.
The government, however, said all these detected people are travellers.
Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) said the South African strain of the virus was detected in four people while the Brazilian strain was found in one.
All the people have been kept in quarantine.
ICMR Director General Balram Bhargava was quoted as saying by the media: "In India, the South African strain of COVID-19 has been detected in four returnees from South Africa. All are travellers."
He said 187 cases of the UK strain have also been found in the country.
