Congress tweeted: "To our longest-serving president Smt. Sonia Gandhi, who worked relentlessly for the ideals of the Congress Party, & through it for the country; we express our utmost gratitude. A guiding light you will always be. #ThankYouSoniaGandhi."

The hashtag trended on Twitter.

Sonia will be replaced by his son Rahul Gandhi.

Sonia became the Congress President in 1998.

Rahul has been elected as the President unopposed by the Congress party.
