‘Hanuman Chalisa gave me courage’: Smit Machchhar recounts flydubai cockpit battle to PM Modi

New Delhi/IBNS: Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar recited the Hindu devotional hymn Hanuman Chalisa for courage while battling his Omani co-pilot during a cockpit attack on a Tel Aviv-bound flydubai flight, media reports said.

Machchhar, who is recovering in a hospital in Abu Dhabi, revealed the details during a video call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. Modi called to inquire about his health and praised him for his courage and quick thinking during the mid-air crisis.

“Whenever I am in pain, I recite the Hanuman Chalisa. At that time too, I only kept reciting the Hanuman Chalisa. Today, one call from you makes me feel really proud,” Machchhar told Modi.

Machchhar recalls cockpit ordeal

Machchhar said he relied on his 17 years of flying experience while dealing with the attack despite suffering serious injuries.

The captain was allegedly stabbed by his co-pilot during the flight and, despite his injuries, managed to open the cockpit door.

His action allowed passengers and crew members to enter the cockpit and overpower the attacker.

Two off-duty pilots who were travelling as passengers also helped take control of the aircraft.

Machchhar told Modi that he realised he had to get back on his feet because otherwise the passengers could lose their lives.

He described the moment as a fight for survival and said the Hanuman Chalisa gave him courage during the ordeal.

The incident took place on September 30 aboard flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was travelling from Dubai to Tel Aviv.

According to reports, the aircraft went into a steep descent after the co-pilot allegedly attacked Machchhar and interfered with the aircraft's controls.

The plane was carrying 174 passengers and 27 children, according to reports, and eventually made an emergency landing in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

Machchhar's intervention enabled passengers and crew to subdue the co-pilot, while other pilots aboard the aircraft helped regain control of the plane.

The passengers and crew were subsequently brought to safety. The circumstances and motive behind the attack remain under investigation.

Modi praises pilot's courage

During the conversation, Modi praised Machchhar's presence of mind and determination to protect those onboard.

The Prime Minister also spoke about Machchhar's mother, Geeta Ben, and the values he received from the Bhagavad Gita. The two spoke in Gujarati about Machchhar's family and recovery.

Machchhar became emotional during the conversation and told Modi that the Prime Minister was his “biggest idol”. He also said receiving the call made him extremely proud.
